February 6, 2019 was the 2nd annual Book Direct day, a national campaign to encourage travelers to book their lodging stays directly with the establishment instead of booking through large OTAs (online travel agencies).
We are big supporters of this recent industry push and want to help educate everyone. What most travelers don't realize is that regardless of size or revenue, any establishment that lists their property on any of the OTA booking channels are required to pay between 15%-18% commission! Imagine giving almost 20% of your income away! That commission is a hard pill to swallow as a small inn but it's almost a necessary evil in today's world of technology and instant results.
Sadly, most establishments end up passing that cost onto the customer through higher rates on the OTA listing. The good news is that if you book direct you're probably going to get a better rate, not to mention talking to a person at the establishment that can help with special requests, suggestions or painlessly make changes to your reservation.
Did you know that if you are searching for a room to rent on G••gle, there is a little blue button that says "Book A Room" that takes you to a list of all the OTA options. But close by there should be a "website" button that will allow you to view everything you'd want to know about the property, call and talk to someone or just BOOK DIRECT online.
So, the next time you want to travel, give us a call or book online at www.bigcountrybandb.com for our best rate, amazing customer service and a great experience at a bed and breakfast.
Thank you to Acorn Internet Services, AIHP (Association of Independent Hospitality Professionals) and PAII (Professional Association of Innkeepers International) for leading this movement, and all the inns, innkeepers, associations and volunteers that are growing this initiative.
